- Geography: Landlocked in South Asia, Nepal boasts diverse landscapes, including the Himalayas, with eight of the world’s ten highest peaks, including Mount Everest. Smaller in size and population of California USA.
- Culture: A secular state rich in cultural heritage, Nepal's major religions are Hinduism and Buddhism.
- Economy: Among the poorest globally, Nepal's economy relies on agriculture, tourism, and remittances.
Health Problems in Rural Nepal:
- The most common ones are diabetes mellitus, hypertension and chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases (COPD). Rural Nepal faces triple challenges: a high burden of communicable diseases; a rising occurrence of NCDs, including neglected mental health; and high mortality rates for mothers and children under five.
- Cervical cancer is the most common cancer in Nepali women. Curable if diagnosed early. Preventable by cervical cancer screening with visual inspection and a simple test with acetic acid.
- Breast cancer is the next most common cancer in Nepali women after cervical cancer. One in every 10 women presenting with a breast lump will be diagnosed with breast cancer.
- Uterine prolapse or pelvic organ prolapse is a common problem among Nepalese women.
- Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) leading cause of death.
- Nutrition disorders - 60% of child deaths in Nepal are from malnutrition.
- Anemia is a common maternal problem during pregnancy and contributes to a large number of maternal deaths.
- Postpartum hemorrhage (PPH) is the most important cause of maternal death. Emergency!!
- Doctors: There are only 0.019 doctors per 1,000 people are in rural areas
- Health Camps: Short-term medical missions are ways to provide the essential care, screening and education to reduce the prevalences of these conditions and save lives. .
